Duotone was an examination of how active versus passive use of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat can affect our social interactions and our impressions of a specific environment. Using a local coffee shop as the site for collecting the content, we hyper-documented both the space and the people in it to analyze how excessive documentation of our surroundings can influence our daily interactions. Through the exhibition, we encouraged our audience to think about how they use these various social networks in their day-to-day lives, while also promoting active—not passive-consumption of social media. In addition to this exhibition, we created a takeaway that showed our findings as well as explaining the concept more in-depth. Fifty books were produced and hand-bound for the graphic design senior exhibition and given away for free to the attendees.
